The Academic Staff Union of Tertiary Institutions in Benue State (ASUTIBS) has suspended its over four months old strike action.

Recall that the union had on January 10, 2022 embarked on a strike action to press home some of her welfare demands.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the union, Dr Chagbe Kurayamen, and the General Secretary, Comr. Eka Dennis, the union said it was appealed to call off the strike to facilitate a peaceful resolution of their grievances.

The statement read in part: “The Academic Staff Union of Tertiary Institutions in Benue State (ASUTIBS) met in Makurdi on Monday, 23rd May, 2022 and resolved to suspend the on-going strike that had commenced on 10th January, 2022 with effect from Wednesday, 25th May, 2022.

“This resolution was predicated upon the appeal of the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Benue State Chapter which was conveyed to us at a meeting of ASUTIBS, Benue State Government delegation and the Executive Committee of Benue State Christian Association of Nigeria.

“At this meeting, both the CAN and Government delegations assured that, a soon as they receive our resolution to suspend the stike, three months of salary arrears accumulated in 2022 (February, March and April) would be paid.

“We were further promised that negotiations with a view to resolving the grievances that drove us to embark on strike would also commence immediately.”

The union appealed to the state government to honour the two promises made to them and ensure that outstanding 2022 salaries are paid to members so as to empower them to effectively resume duties.

It also said that negotiations on all outstanding strike issues should be initiated and completed within a three month period, starting on May 25, 2022 and satisfactorily terminating on August 25, 2022 as a means of averting future resumption without notice of the same strike action.
